 Cyril Robert Gard |
I was born at Tea Tree in 1918. The youngest of six, I had two sisters and three brothers. My parents were Harold Victor
Gard & Eva Sophia, who had been an Elliss from Berriedale. My father wasn’t in the war, but two of my brothers were.
My parents had a small farm, mainly growing oats and hay for chaff which didn’t fetch a good price, it was only a case of
survival. They also owned a small property at Brighton. My father did a bit of everything from sheep to cattle, and the farmyard
kept half the table. We grew vegetables, had eggs, milk and cream.
The Gard’s had been in Tea Tree since bushranging days. My grandfather Robert Gard lived on a property called Rosewood.
Yes, we had stories of bushrangers. An old uncle had a chest of drawers, and one drawer was kept locked, because it had
valuables in it. When the Gard’s of the time were away, bush rangers came in and opened the drawers with a crowbar, and it still
had a mark across it where the crowbar slipped.
