 Bertram Leonard Gard |
Bertram Leonard Gard was born in Franklin, Tasmania, on 26th March 1927, to Stella and Len Gard. His early years were spent playing in the apple storage sheds at Woodstock in the Huon Valley where his father worked. He also spent time at his Grandmothers place in Glen Huon. Bert first started school at Cradoc then later attended Glen Huon school. Each school was about four miles from home and Bert's adventurous nature meant that he had many experiences along the way, some of them not very pleasant. As his mother came from a large family, living nearby, Bert spent many happy days with some of his uncles and cousins fishing, hunting or rambling in the bush around Glen Huon. They were typical young boys getting into mischief, but enjoying life to the full. Each year for many years Bert and his brothers accompanied their mother spending days picking raspberries from dawn until dark. Then it was off to the Derwent Valley to pick hops. Read more |
