My Grandmother was Amy Gard, a daughter of Robert and Anne Gard. She was born at Brighton in Tasmania on 16th November, 1870 and died on 19th August, 1961, aged 91. From when I was a small child, I remember her as a great storyteller and she could recite poetry she had learned at school, even when she was in her last years. Very long "story" poems and bush ballads were her favourites. She often wrote verses from poems or short poems onto cards or paper to send to us for our birthdays or special occasions. Best of all, she loved to tell about her young days at "Rosewood" at Tea tree and at school and later events when the family lived at Brighton, where they attended St Marks Church at Pontville. She could remember the names of many people who lived there and the surrounding areas of Broadmarsh, Sorell Creek, Old Beach, tea Tree and Campania, in particular. One of her favourite stories was of the time Henry Phillips and his family lived at "Rosewood", and the house was attacked by the bushranger Martin Cash and some of his men. Amy had a book with an extract written by Martin Cash describing his exploits, including the raid at "Rosewood".
