Alfred James gard, of the firm of Gard brothers, motor and cycle manufacturers, 21 and 23 Gouger Street, Adelaide, and 45, O'Connell Street, North Adelaide, was born in Gilbert Street, Adelaide, on June 1, 1871. He was educated at Grote and Sturt Streets Public Schools, and at Prince Alfred Colege, and was afterwards apprenticed to engine-fitting and turning at the Government Locomotive Works (then at North Terrace), and subsequently at Islington. After serving his time he remained in the employ of the Governement as a journeyman for three years. He then proceeded to Western Australia, and spent nearly two years prospecting at Mount Jackson, Coolgardie, and at the White Feather (now known as Kanowna). Having been fairly successful on the goldfields, he returned to Adelaide at the end of 1891. read more
