 Francis Crossman Doveton |
AN INTERESTING CAREER.
There died recently, at Copland, Lewisham-road, Prahran (Vic) in his 87th year, Francis Crossman Doveton, and although unheard of by most and almost forgotten by the few who did not know him, he played an active part in the earliest Victorian-gold era.
He was on August 21, 1851, appointed gold commissioner for Ballarat, being tho first in Victoria. When the mining licences became oppressive he was continually coming in-contact with those diggers who were trying to evade payment of the fee. He was accused of being harsh and imperious in enforcing the Act, but explained to the miners that although sympathising with them he was powerless to alter it, and being placed as commissioner, was forced to administer, the measure as he found it.
In rapid succession 12 more young men were appointed goldfields' commissioners, all from home, one only outliving Mr Doveton namely, Mr J.A Panton, who received the appointment at 19, and is still in harness in Melbourne. read more |
